Week 38 Update
Rogue Souls » Devlog
TL;DR worked on User Interface. Updated designs for Karma, Laws, & Legal System.
Build & Deployment:
Development:
- Wrote and tested a bunch of UI components, including static & animated sprites for the interface.
Design:
- Updated Legal System design to integrated new work on the Karma soul component (see below). There are now three "branches" of law corresponding to the different sorts of interactions character have at different levels of society:
- Civil law: most directly interacts with Relationships & Obligations but extends to accidents, injuries, property damage, etc. and Civil Rights violations (e.g. discrimination based on Age, Race, Sex, Class, and other characteristics).
- Contract law: primarily corresponds to Contracts and interactions with Mega-Corporations; but also relates to Social Classes e.g. Farmer, Sailor, Soldier, Worker, etc.
- Criminal law: generally categorized into felonies and misdemeanors, these tend to be better known, e.g. arson, assault & battery, bribery, burglary, extortion, fraud, homicide, perjury, racketeering, theft, vandalism, etc.
- Civil law: most directly interacts with Relationships & Obligations but extends to accidents, injuries, property damage, etc. and Civil Rights violations (e.g. discrimination based on Age, Race, Sex, Class, and other characteristics).
- Worked a lot on the design of systems for the Karma soul component:
- Relationships are a composite of ideas & mechanics borrowed from Bliss Stage, Fiasco, and Traveller.
- Obligations draw inspiration from Star Wars: Edge of the Empire and Mount & Blade.
- Contracts are a composite of ideas & mechanics borrowed from Deep Rock Galactic, Hades, and Team Fortress 2.
- Social Classes are a design combining Non-Weapon Proficiency from 2e Dungeons & Dragons, Professions from Airship Pirates, and Populations from Victoria 2.
- Relationships are a composite of ideas & mechanics borrowed from Bliss Stage, Fiasco, and Traveller.
- There is a lot more that doesn't fit in this update, like stuff about Trespassing as a concept is inspired by designs from Hitman 2 (2018) discussed at GDC. It will play into felonies & misdemeanors but doesn't relate directly to a character's soul components.
Influence:
- Returned to Jujutsu Kaisen after a break. I had only watched the first 3 episodes when they first appeared on Crunchyroll, I'm now about 8 episodes deep because I was promised wizard battles. It's okay so far. I'm not really "wowed" but it's tolerable. I think their "Curse" magic is comparable to the Shadow State of magic in Rogue Souls.
- Wife & I watched the first couple episodes of Bocchi the Rock and I love it. So good.
- Learned about a 5e D&D campaign setting called BranCalonia and did some reading on it. When I have some cash to burn, I'll pick up the setting book. It looks so good! I love the interplay of Misdeeds, Notoriety, & Bounties. Gonna borrow from this to develop Karma.
Marketing:
- Great meeting with Hazel & Don! We talked music & projects, put together a file sharing system, and picked a goal for music to get us to November. I'm trying to curb my enthusiasm but I'm just so excited!
- These devlogs "do pretty good numbers" when I get them up on time and actually promote them on Mastodon. I should try to make a habit of getting them up on time and promoting them. Eh heh.
